Many people are attracted to Scouting in their youth, or come to it later in life as a parent. They want to help, but find the commitment either of attending weekly events, or becoming Warranted, too much of a strain on their lives. This pool of talent has been harnessed in the Greenmount Scout Group by the formation of:

Now boasting over 20 members, it is made up of people who are past Leaders, are parents (of boys present and past) and some who just want to volunteer to do something great in their community.

The Greenmount Group Scout Fellowship started on Friday, 2nd March 2001 with no real agenda or plan. The initial ideas were:

• To provide assistance to Beaver, Cub, Scout or Venture Scout Leaders when asked

• To suggest ideas which each section could take up if they so desire

• To help with the Annual Bonfire and B-B-Q

• To assist with the general running of the Group

As the years have rolled by, the Fellowship have broadened their horizons and now embrace activities in village life as well as in the Scout Group. Some of the events are:

• Organised the Village Jubilee Party in June 2002 with an estimated 350 people attending enjoying among other activities, a picnic, B-B-Q and street entertainment provided by the Guide Troop

• Organised the annual Group Fun Activity evening

• Organised the 40th Anniversary Group activity at Bowley attended by over 160 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, and adults. This was a long weekend of fun and the weather for once was TOO HOT! - see report elsewhere on the website.

• Made an appeal to raise money for the Tsunami victims and arranged a sponsored walk along a local trail. In all 450 people joined in and jointly raised £6,750.

• For the Environmental Badge, the Fellowship arranged walks in the countryside around Greenmount to see our Industrial Heritage and how it has now reverted back to nature. These walks are from 6.15 - 8.30 every Friday night in June. This year saw the 4th year of these walks.

• Joined the Holcombe Heritage Society and was instrumental in producing a DVD of Holcombe Moor. This and over activities led the Society to winning the Silver Otter award for conservation from the MOD.

Less glamorous and yet vital roles are:

• Helping with the catering at the annual Group Bonfire held at Ashworth Valley and indoors at the Group's meeting place

• Providing transport during the Scout's summer programme

• Helping with the working on the Wild Garden during the Group working towards the Group Environment Award

We are also a very sociable group and regularly meet for meals out, BBQ's and other events, which are away from the children, but allow like-minded people to enjoy a good chat, a joke and a drink, even trying our hands at clay pigeon shooting!
