Programme includes the usual progressive and proficiency badge work and special themed nights during the winter with ideas taken from Scouting magazine or designed by Leaders and Patrol Leaders. Indoor training evenings where the Scouts learn basic scouting skills, the theory of outdoor skills and practice handling equipment used for the outdoor and adventurous activities together with fun and games nights.
During Summer an outdoor programme is run on Friday nights, canoeing, pioneering, walking and other outdoor activities were the Scouts can test the skills they have learnt over the winter months. The Troop has a "Group Safari" - a Group bases evening with all sections taking part. |
Summer Camp The first week in August has historically been our Annual Summer Camp. This is usually in the Lake District on a farmer’s fields but on the odd occasion we have ventured out to other areas e.g. Lake Bala but these camps have ended camping on "rain made" lakes rather than farmer’s fields.
During the week, the Scouts camp as Patrols (not always the Troop night Patrols) sleeping and catering for themselves. For the full programme of activities organised on a daily basis, the Scouts are split into age and ability groups. Off site activities include canoeing, walking, gorge walking, climbing and abseiling with on site activities including camp ovens, backwoods cooking, pioneering and general camp safety. Through the week, the Patrols work towards the 'Summer Camp Award' with points being awarded at each morning's full kit and kitchen inspection and organised games in the evening.
Over the past few years, Tuesday has become "Competition Day" in the morning the Patrols visit bases or complete challenges. In the afternoon Scouts are left to prepare a three course meal of their choice (Leaders buy the food on the Tuesday morning using the shopping lists provided by the Patrol Leaders) and have to invite two Leaders to dine with them. Each year the quality of presentation and taste of food always impresses the Leaders - if parents could see the food they would be amazed what can be prepared under camp conditions.

District & County Competitions The Troop has always taken an active part in the District and County competitions e.g. First Aid Challenge competition, Camping competition and Swimming / Water challenge. Unfortunately over the past years, the District Camping competition have not been well attended by other Troops which has led Greenmount to be automatically entered into the County Competition. Over the past seven years, Greenmount has won the County Competition the most. The Troop has represented the County twice in the last three years at the Regional Camping Competition.
For the past few years, the Troop has been taking part in the Bolton District Pike View Hike which is an invitation only event. Winning the first event, we have done well despite not winning the overall trophy.
